AthFest 2/3
Well, the Internet destroyed my previous post and lost it so I get to re-type it…
Day 2
I returned to downtown Athens at approximately 12:31, well, a little later than that actually, but i specifically remember parking 5 blocks away from the festival and hearing Nappy Roots performing way waaay before I reached the stage. Day 2 was the vendor day. Since the festival opened that morning (and the vendors were actually set-up…) there was quite a crowd. There was even a petting zoo.
But moreso than the vendors was downtown Athens. These were the stores most looking forward to this weekend festival, and they showed their thanks by keeping their doors open and letting their coveted icebox air out into the streets. Every ten steps there was a gift from the gods. One of these steps took me into Transmetropolitan Pizza. There I ran into The Death on Two Wheels (from ATL). Stellar guys, informed me of their show that evening at Arch Bar. I marked my calender, well, my brain.
Another aspect of Saturday were the “Secret Shows”. They weren’t exactly secret but I call them that because they weren’t exactly publicized int he AthFest info cause the times conflicted with the main stage stuff. Anyway, I walked over to Little Kings and to my surprise The Empties were playing. They had played the main stage Friday and I had no idea they were playing again. Also, I didn’t know that Little Kings was giving away free Terrapin. After The Empties was Act of Congress with their 4 piece bluegrassy folky rocky violin—mandolin—guitar-stand-up bass-ness. They covered Such Great Heights and Greensleeves. FUN band. Then Ponderosa came on-Whickey Bar Rock connoisseurs. And Trances Arc ended the day-time secret show at Little Kings.
Well that’s the beginning of Saturday. I had no internet over the weekend and any ‘hot spot’ in Athens was near impossible to get in, much less sit and write in. The town was packed.
Later that night I went to the Main Stage to see Bloodkin and then off to Arch to se DoTW. Pics and such will come later. I have jury duty in the morning…
